The trial of a man charged with stabbing his young nephew to death on Christmas Eve has ended with a murder conviction.

At Helsinki District Court on Tuesday the 37-year old was found guilty of murdering the 7-year old boy in December last year.

The man had been visiting his family at their Arabianranta apartment in Helsinki when the attack occurred. Rescue crews arrived at the scene shortly before midnight on Christmas Eve but the boy was already dead from stab wounds the uncle inflicted.

The uncle confessed to the stabbing, and claimed he had been suffering from delusions before he killed the boy.

After psychiatric evaluations, the court found the defendant not mentally competent, and did not pass sentence at this time.
